American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting- Dr. Cassidy

Several of the doctors in our practice went to the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting in Chicago last month.  They each attended several different classes or seminars of their choice.  These next few blogs will be about their experiences at Academy.

Dr. Bruce Cassidy, one our ophthalmologists who specialzies in cataract and refractive surgery, said the most informational part of the meeting for him was the four hour "Spotlight on Cataracts" symposium that he attended.  He indicated that this program focused  on cataract surgery and some of the complications that can arise from surgery, and how to manage those issues.  The symposium ended with talk of the new femtosecond laser cataract surgery, and the three options for femtosecond lasers that will be available for cataract surgeons once full FDA clearance has been given.

Femtosecond lasers are a newer technology to ophthalmology.  We currently use a femtosecond laser in LASIK surgery for the creation of the flap, it will soon be available for use in cataract surgeries.  Femtosecond lasers automate certain parts of cataract surgery - the corneal incision, the capsulorhexis, and the subdividing of the nucleus,- and can also perform limbal relaxing incisions, or LRI's, when necessary.
