NOVEMBER IS DIABETIC EYE DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH

Approximately 29 million Americans have diabetes.  Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of the disease, causing damage to the retina that occurs with long term diabetes.  Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in Americans.  People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at risk for this disease.

If you are a diabetic, you should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every year.  Diabetic retinopathy typically does not cause noticable symptoms until significant damage has occured and complications of the disease have developed, so it is very important that diabetics have yearly eye exams. Most insurance policies will cover eye exams once a year for individuals with diabetes.

If you are a diabetic and you have not had an eye exam yet this year, now is the time to call!
