Meet Eye Photographer Darrin Landry!

Darrin Landry is the photographer at Eyecare Medical Group. He has worked at EMG for the last 9 year and is a Certified Retinal Angiographer and a certified Optical Coherence Tomographer. He does the bulk of the OCT imaging, fundus photos, angiography, slit lamp photos, and ultrasonography here at Eyecare Medical Group.

Darrin started his work in the medical field as a surgical tech in the Air Force. He was offered a job in an ophthalmology practice in 1989, where he started out as a tech working primarily with cataracts and glaucoma. It was at this practice that Darrin learned retinal imaging. He switched practices in 1992 and has worked in Retina ever since.

Darrin also works as an ophthalmic consultant for pharmaceutical companies, academic institutes, and private practices. He has traveled all over the United States and Europe doing consulting work and is anticipating some travel to Latin America in fall of 2012. He works with several academic institutes such as Universität Münster, Germany; Sapienza – Università di Roma, Italy; Universite’ de Nantes, France; Universidad de Valladolid, Spain; McGill University, Montreal; Duke University, Durham, NC; and Scripps Clinic, La Jolla, CA. He has worked with Project Guatemala, a group of doctors and technicians that travel to Guatemala to give free eye care to the Mayan Indians, for 5 years. Darrin has written two books about retinal imaging- Retinal Imaging Simplified and Optical Coherence Tomography- A Clinical Atlas of Retinal Images. His favorite place that he’s traveled for work thus far is Paris, France.

Darrin has also received several awards for his work including:

• 2008-Honorable Mention, Scientific Exhibition, Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society
• 2008-Speaker of the Day Award, Hawaiian Eye Meeting
• 2006-Honorable Mention, Scientific Exhibition, Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society (2 awards)

Darrin enjoys his work at Eyecare Medical Group and appreciates the flexibility he has in his current job. “EMG allows me flexibility and encourages me to further my expertise and allow me to represent Eyecare Medical Group on a world stage” says Darrin. “EMG is always staying ahead of the technology curve, which allows me to continue to be an expert in the field”.

In the limited amount of free time that he has, Darrin enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, both of whom are students at the University of Maine. Hiking is a passion of his that he tries to enjoy even while traveling, when his schedule allows.

Along with all of the other things he does, Darrin also has contributed to our Eyecare Medical Group blog several times throughout the past year, with pieces about diabetic retinopathy and autofluorescence imaging, as well as sharing some of his award winning photos with us.
