Two New Treatments May Help Slow Retinopathy In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes.

The CNN (7/23, Young) "Paging Dr. Gupta" blog reported, "Researchers have found two new treatments that could slow" diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes. In a study of 2,865 patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that "intensive blood sugar control and the combination therapy" of blood pressure medicine and "a combination of lipid and fenofibrate therapy" worked to decrease "the progression of vision loss by one-third." However, "patients in the intensive blood sugar control arm of the study had a higher risk of severe low blood sugar and death. The National Eye Institute says doctors need to consider these risks when discussing a treatment plan with their patients."
